Calico ghost town in California

Calico Ghost Town, located in the Calico Mountains of the Mojave Desert region in Southern California, is a fascinating and historic destination.

Founded in 1881 as a silver mining town and later converted into a county park, Calico Ghost Town is a captivating glimpse into the past.

Situated just three miles from Barstow and Yermo, and conveniently located off Interstate 15, Calico Ghost Town attracts visitors from around the world who come to experience the charm of a real ghost town. Its location, set on a mesa with a beautiful view of the Mojave Valley, adds to its allure.

Calico Ghost Town’s history dates back to the 1870s when silver was first discovered in the Calico Mountains. The subsequent silver rush led to the rapid development of a bustling mining town. At its peak, Calico boasted a population of over 1,200 people and featured various businesses, a school, and several saloons.

However, as the value of silver declined in the late 19th century, Calico Ghost Town eventually became abandoned. It wasn’t until the 1950s that Walter Knott, famous for his Knott’s Berry Farm, purchased the town and tirelessly restored its buildings to their original 1880s appearance.

Today, when you visit Calico Ghost Town, you’ll step back in time to the Wild West era. The town features numerous preserved buildings, original artifacts, and exhibits that showcase the life and history of California’s silver miners. You can explore the old buildings, the mine, and even visit the quirky Bottle House made entirely of bottles.
